Emotional Traumas Manifest Into Physical Symptoms
Physical pain can be indicative that we still have some emotional work to do. On the bright side, this means we have control over our physical health, as long as we keep our emotions in-check.
Negative feelings like anxiety, depression and stress cause a spike in hormone cortisol, which in turn suppresses the immune system, leading to impaired physical health. So, technically, you can tell someone to “stay positive” and it could quite literally be medical advice? When I dealt with debilitating anxiety and depression, I had all kinds of physical health issues. Doctors ran tests, on tests, on tests and nothing was found. They finally concluded that it was due to my poor mental health taking an inevitable toll on my physical health. Neuropsychiatry backs me up on this one, finding that the mind and body interact instantaneously.
So, although there are things we can’t control in this lifetime, two things we can control are our emotions and physical health. Next time you experience a negative emotion, take a step back and breathe through it. Don’t suppress it. Don’t judge it. Take responsibility.
