Quarantine + 7 Day Phone Detox = Bliss

With the advent of COVID-19, I’ve witnessed the immense opportunity for introspection, self-growth and discovery for those who are brave and willing to seek the light in the midst of darkness. My heart goes out to everyone who has been directly and indirectly affected by this virus that is out of our control. Now, how we choose to react to the situation is 100% in our hands, and in our power.

I took this time to turn off all my notifications on my phone as a tech-detox for 7 days. I left my phone calls open, because realistically if someone was in dire need of my help, I knew they would call. The hardest part: I made it a point to remain in silence for the duration of my retreat.

Once I put all the distractions away, I truly felt I was the composer of my life- orchestrating where to put my time and energy. I wrote, read, sang, meditated, did yoga, and played my sound bowls on my balcony for my neighbors to bask in the healing sounds. I was simply dancing to the rhythm of time, using every moment to do something that I truly wanted to do. In what other occasion do we have the time to genuinely listen to our inner voice? When was the last time you practiced your favorite hobby? Have you left yourself so abandoned that you can’t remember the last time you fed your soul? In excess, constant communication to others truly makes us isolated from ourselves.

COVID-19 has brought in great tragedy, grieving and chaos. But, in another light, it’s gifted us with the fortuitous opportunity to slow down and return to the things that matter: love, joy, peace- call it what you want. Now that I’ve finished my retreat, I carry with me the same air of stillness that I felt during my respite. I’m savoring each moment with more presence, I’m deliberately picking my words, actions and placing my energy towards places/people that serve my growth. In the wise words of Eckhart Tolle, I’m living in the Now!

My experience has been so profound, so centering that I had to share my insight. If you’re looking for an acute self-growth/discovery pill, this is your medicine.
